BMW’s Competitive Edge †A Case Study

Premium car makers operate in a highly dynamic and competitive marketplace. BMW is among the companies that have shown a stronghold on global markets that include Europe, US, Asia, and emerging markets in the Middle East. Its history shows instances when it has come under pressure from market forces, but the European carmaker has proven, time and again, that it can spring back and rejoin the race of top industry players. Recent years have even seen BMW appealing to new-generations users opting for winning design standards and quality. Indeed, BMW’s latest car models boast of enhanced performance and dynamics, making the carmaker one of the strongest luxury car contenders that continues to aggressively battle for consumer attention in the contemporary age. BMW’s Competitive Edge – A Case Study Cutting-edge technology, driving pleasure, comfort and luxury are closely associated with luxury cars like BMW, Lexus, Mercedes Benz, and Audi. For the average car buyer, each of these marques commands a strong presence. On the other end of the spectrum are the discerning clientele, whose fierce loyalty to a car brand or high regard for automaking heritage may account for sales volume uptrends. Indeed, premium carmakers, among them German automaker BMW, continually vie for consumer attention and nurture high hopes of hitting record sales despite rising costs related to materials and new model launches. What BMW has in great measure, though, is a sound business strategy that banks not so much on decades of experience and foresight but more on using a coherent theme or image as â€Å"the ultimate driving machine† to utmost advantage. After many false starts in the twenty years after the war,† (Kay, 1999, para. 8) BMW has clearly made â€Å"the match between the distinctive capabilities of the organization and the market opportunities it faces† (Kay, 1999, para. 8). In recent years, the pressure on BMW has been emanating mainly from the persistent threat of substitute products. Notwithstanding its vast experience and â€Å"ability to develop and use sophisticated technical skills†¦ the source of competitive advantage for so many German companies,† (Kay, 1999, para. ) BMW faces the tough possibility that luxury car buyers may opt for alternative brands in the market vis-a-vis the latter’s price offerings. The perceived level of product differentiation is another thing to contend with in the highly competitive luxury automobile industry. What may strike some customers as a refreshing innovation may be totally revolting for others. In most cases, it all boils down to a brand war. A satisfied BWM owner, as personified by the high-level executive of a fast-expanding conglomerate in Asia, cited brand as the most compelling reason to purchase a BMW. â€Å"It’s a good, reliable car† (J. Lucas, personal communication, July 31, 2008). Yet, as another ranking business executive asserted, â€Å"Mercedes Benz is still the best, while Audi is the rising star† (A. Lagmay, personal communication, July 31, 2008). Indeed, consumer tastes and requirements are evolving, and premium car producers who have made sizable investments in automobile design, quality and performance stand to reap some profit. In BMW’s case, solid growth was realized during the first half of 2008, despite testing economic conditions in certain automobile markets across the world (â€Å"BMW Group increases sales,† 2008, para. ). Today, pressure is mounting with the threat posed by the entry of new competitors. Automobile industry players stepping up price competition had been evident in the first few years of the 21st century, with â€Å"low price or incentives† serving as the â€Å"prevalent means to displace market share from competitors† (Lencioni, 2004, p. 735). To contain the costs, companies like BMW set up production plants in global growth markets. Business cycles fluctuate, though. While the European prestige car maker posted increased sales of its BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands by 4. percent from January to June 2008 (â€Å"BMW Group increases sales,† 2008, para. 1), it was â€Å"not entirely able to avoid the difficult economic trends in important individual markets such as the USA and Japan†¦ global sales slipped 2. 8 per cent in the month of June to 146,138 units† (â€Å"BMW Group increases sales,† 2008, para. 2). Under its Chief Executive Helmut Panke, BMW has dramatically expanded its product offerings, setting its sights on market segments of the future. However, â€Å"moving into smaller cars meant earning the lower margins that were typical of those market segments† (Lencioni, 2004, p. 41) as compared to mid-size sedans and luxury limousines. As an analyst pointed out, â€Å"Compared with volume producers, BMW’s manufacturing costs are much higher, its product development cost more costly, and its purchasing costs higher† (Edmondson, Palmeri, Grow, & Tierney, 2003, para. 13). In essence, BMW has had to contend not just with the bargaining power of customers, but also with the bargaining power of suppliers which provide the unique resources to sustain its main sources of competitive advantage: brand quality and reputation of reliability. Nowadays, as the intensity of competitive rivalry heats up, BMW’s burning obsession with performance and brand identity or image has aided the firm in closing the widening gap with other luxury cars. BMW’s research and development teams have been caught in a frenzy to maintain competitive edge. â€Å"Development teams that pore over everything from (such) market feedback to innovations are encouraged to engage in `friendly fighting’ to decide the vital characteristics of a new BMW† (Edmondson, et. al, 2003, para. 24). As it faces countless threats and risks, BMW remains poised to prevail and deliver. Among the critical success factors in the high-end market where BMW competes is its design and brand appeal, which had become the customers’ overriding choice features (Lencioni, 2004, p. 741). Effective branding, likewise, created â€Å"emotional connections between customers on one side and products, salesmen, other users on the other† (Lencioni, 2004, p. 736) although this was true not just for BMW but for other luxury marques as well. One thing that worked to BMW’s advantage had been its â€Å"firm control on the supply chain† (Lencioni, 2004, p. 737). BMW nurtured long-running and dependable supplier relationships. Coupled with a highly talented workforce that operated at â€Å"the most flexible and most productive† factories in Germany (Edmondson, et. al, 2003, para. 20) to churn out vehicles with styling variations, unprecedented performance and safety features and individuality, the German carmaker remains a potent force to reckon with in the international automobile industry.

Looking at many cases in the country, it is seen that federalism gives the national and state authorities control over their respective spheres of influence. Since the establishment of the Constitution, there have been negative and positive impacts of federalism on freedom of speech throughout history. One positive impact of federalism on free speech is that it ensures democracy through increased citizen participation. In a federal government, there is a division of power of the government into several units. Such an administration promotes freedom of speech as citizens are allowed to say what they think about different aspects of governance. We will write a custom essay sample on Year-round Schooling Arguement Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now You practically have the time of your life not even laying hands on a single book. When you arrive back and you attend your first day of school, you are shocked to see that you’ve practically forgotten all of the information of the past year. Now, you must waste your precious class time and time outside of school to regain all of that Information. Year-round schooling should be Implemented across the U. S. In order to improve retention. Reasons that it should be implemented is because programs that help increase retention over the summer are not accessible to everyone and even with good amounts of sleep, students do not perform any better on standardized tests. Some might say that summer schools/tutoring programs to keep students Involved in learning In the summer are available to everyone, but that Is false. In reality, summer programs are accessible to those of higher income and not those of lower income because of this though students of lower income forget what they’ve learned over the course of the year. Summer vacation is causing those students to spend too much time outside of educational environment and because of that, their retention decreases. So, undeniably, year- mound schooling could stop summer break from sullying students’ education. It is said that even with sufficient sleep, only half of students tested with year-round schooling made Adequate Yearly Progress. The real truth is that with smaller breaks in the year students got sufficient sleep which enhanced their memory. In addition to memory, sleep improves focus, stamina, and attention span. With year-round schooling students became more perennial with their work and were less likely inclined to cause a brouhaha class. It is ultimately up to the students’ and staffs’ illnesses whether or not to excel in school with year-round schooling, Just like regular school. It Is of common belief that students’ performance In school Is solely based on their Intelligence and focus. However, society Is endlessly suggesting excuses in attempt to justify the factors counting against students’ success in school. Factors such as how qualified a teacher is, teaching methods, the type of environment, or the amount of discipline in class can count against students’ school excellence. Honestly, the possibilities are endless and the main hindrance to successful student education Is summer vacation. Mitchell Feldman, a writer had Douglas high school In Parkland, Florida, states research that â€Å"According to the university of Missouri and Tennessee State university, student achievement test scores decline over summer vacation and summer loss equals about one month on a grade level equivalent scale. † He states that â€Å"If vacations were shortened, retention would increase. This Just proves only how detrimental summer vacation is, and how beneficial year-round schooling Is. Year-round schooling should be Implemented across the U. S. In order to Improve retention. Also because programs even with good amounts of sleep, students do not perform any better on standardized tests, and because summer break is a main factor in the academic failure of students. Telecommunication Industry for Rapid Market - myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theTelecommunication Industry for Rapid Market. Answer: The increasing use of modern technology and the rapid growing market competition are the two primary factors that are responsible for the growth and expansion of the telecommunication industry. One of the unique characteristics of telecommunication industry is that it uses optical fibers as a medium of transmission of data instead of using twisted pair or coaxial cables (Ziemann et al. 2013). Secondly, the use of ISDN or Inter Services Digital Network is making the industry an entirely digitalized system and is enhancing the quality as well as speed of the digital communication. Thirdly, the telecommunication industry transfers high data connection and volume through high speed line. For short transfers, the low data volume and usually a fixed length of the message along with small number of dialog cycles are been performed. Best and worst service practices within the telecommunication industry The major telecom service providers in Australia are Vodafone, Testra and Optus (Beltran 2014). The 4p of service marketing (Best Practices) Product The three major telecommunication service providers of Australia provide more than 30 different services to their customers individually. The primary products and services include digital television internet services, fixed line and mobile telephony and branded handsets. These are the most used and most vital services that every man in the current era needs in order to ensure smooth flowing of his daily activities. Place In order to ensure that the customers are easily getting access to their services and products, Vodafone, Telstra and Optus opened up several customer care touch points as well as linked with several distributers in the city. These are helping in the availability of the products for the customers Promotion Each of the service providers uses very easy and efficient promotional methods in order to reach their target customers. They make use of posters, hoardings, television, print media and posters etc. With the same, the promotional activities are very eye catching and interesting. For example, the VAS services of the Vodafone Australia are promoted by making use of zoozoo advertisements (Desai 2013). Furthermore, each of their websites consists of downloadable videos, wallpapers, ringtones etc., which allows the customers to spread the messages all around. Pricing The prices vary differently for different kinds of products and services and that too at a very affordable range. The common people do not need to dig up their pockets in order to get entertained and connect with their dear ones. Worst Practices: It has been found out from the recent survey that the telecommunication industry of Australia (telco) was undergoing through high level of customer complaints. The root causes of the complaints were the unrealistic consumer expectation, due to the quality of the information available for the customers pre-scale and because of receiving unexpectedly high amount of bills by the customers. This has resulted in influencing the behavior of the consumers such as choice overload, defaults, endowment, heuristics, framing biases and hyperbolic discounting. Overall customer satisfaction: The overall customer satisfaction with the provided service of the Australian telecommunication industry continues to be high, i.e., 66% as of 2016 (Kim, Kim and Wachter 2013). One in every four customers are reportedly very satisfied and two in every five are satisfied according to the survey conducted in 2016. However, 14% of the customers are dissatisfied with the services in some or the other way. References: Beltrn, F., 2014. US Industrial Revolution Essays - Rockefeller Family, Standard Oil

US Industrial Revolution The Standard Oil Company founded by John D. Rockefeller and the U.S. Steel Company founded by Andrew Carnegie. The Standard Oil Company and U.S. Steel Company were made successful in different ways due to the actions of their different owners. The companies differed in their labor relations, market control, and structural organization. In the steel industry, Carnegie developed a system known as vertical integration. This means that he cut out the middle man. Carnegie bought his own iron and coal mines because using independent companies cost too much and were inefficient. By doing this he was able to undersell his competetors because they had to pay the competitors they went through to get the raw materials. Unlike Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller integrated his oil business from top to bottom, his distinctive innovation in movement of American industry was horizontal. This meant he followed one product through all its stages. For example, rockrfeller controlled the oil when it was drilled, through the refining stage, and he maintained control over the refining process turning it into gasoline. Although these two powerful men used two different methods of management their businesses were still very successful (Conlin, 425-426). Tycoons like Andrew Carnegie, "the steel king," and John D. Rockefeller, "the oil baron," exercised their genius in devising ways to circument competition. Although, Carnegie inclined to be tough-fisted in business, he was not a monopolist and disliked monopolistic trusts. John D. Rockefeller came to dominate the oil industry. With one upward stride after another he organized the Standard Oil Company, which was the nucleus of the great trust that was formed. Rockefeller showed little mercy. He believed primitive savagery prevailed in the jungle world of business, where only the fittest survived. He persued the policy of "ruin or rule." Rockefeller's oil monopoly did turn out a superior product at a relatively cheap price. Rockefeller belived in ruthless business, Carnegie didn't, yet they both had the most successful companies in their industries. (The American Pageant, pages 515-518) Rockefeller treated his customers in the same manner that Andrew Carnegie treated his workers: cruel and harsh. The Standard Oil Company desperately wanted every possible company to buy their products. Standard Oil used ruthless tactics when Rockefeller threatenedto start his own chain of grocery stores and put local merchants out of business if they did not buy oil from Standard Oil Company. Carnegie dealt with his workers with the same cold lack of diplomacy and consideration. Carnegie would encourage an unfriendly competition between two of his workers and he goaded them into outdoing one another. Some of his employees found working under Carnegie unbearable. These rivalries became so important to the employees that somedidn't talk to each other for years (McCloskkey, page 145). Although both Carnegie and Rockefeller created extermely successsful companies, they both used unscrupulous methods in some aspect of their corporation building to get to the top. The success of the Standard Oil Company and U.S. Steel company was credited to the fact that their owners ran them with great authority. In this very competetive time period, many new businesses were being formed and it took talented businessmen to get ahead and keep the companies running and make the fortunes that were made during this period.
